Hayden Andrew

I've been working on this post for 8 years and it's taken me this long to get my words together. I know that I've left some things out but this is all that I am capable of sharing right now.

After we lost Bryton we were ecstatic to find out that we were pregnant again. We tried not to get too excited until we made it past 10 weeks gestation. We started making plans and buying things that we would need for the baby.

I had severe morning sickness but the doctor assured me that everything was fine. I spent my days coming up with names and getting our small basement apartment ready. At 19 weeks we found out that we were having another boy and we were over the moon and couldn't wait to be parents.

We decided to come to San Diego for Christmas 2002 and shortly after we got back home to Utah I was put on bed rest. I was tired but everything was progressing perfectly. I woke on the morning of February 21st to the baby kicking me. I got up and got ready for my appointment that day. The doctor took one look at me and knew that something was off. Blood was drawn and I was sent home to rest. 1 hour later my doctor called and insisted that I get to the hospital. I was immediately admitted and Robert was called at work and told to come join me.

The doctors told Robert that I had gone septic and that my kidney's and heart were shutting down. They then told him that our son had passed way and to not expect me to live through the delivery. Robert called my parents and they drove 800 miles through the night to get to the hospital in time.

I was sent to the ICU and given pitocin to start labor. I remember crying and it hurting so much but being afraid to scream and let the nurses know how much pain I was in. I wasn't allowed to have any pain killers because of the multiple organ failure, so I delivered our son without meds. Our perfect Angel was born at 2am on February 22, 2003. He weighed 2 lbs and was 16 inches long.

As soon as Hayden was born I received 2 different blessings(one was from my OB) and 4 blood transfusions. I was pumped full of medications and to the shock and disbelief of the doctors and against all odds, I lived through the night.

The next morning the nurses asked if I wanted to see our son and I wanted nothing to do with him because it hurt so much. That night my Mom was able to convince me that in order to heal, I needed to say goodbye. As soon as I held him I knew he was meant to be ours and that his name should be Hayden Andrew. He was given a name and a blessing and then taken to the morgue.

The morning of the 24th I was taken off all of the machines because miraculously I was healing and my heart and kidney's showed no signs of distress. I was sent to the bereavement wing of the hospital so that I could finish recovering. I had lost so much muscle and coordination that I had to learn how to walk again before I could go home.

I was so worried that I wouldn't be able to attend my own sons funeral which was planned for the 28th. I worked really hard and thanks to the amazing care I recieved I was able to go home on the 27th. I still wasn't 100% better so I spent the next 4 months at home on bedrest while I recovered. It was 5 months until I was released from my doctors care.

During this time I experienced some of the darkest days of my life and I was so scared that it would drive us apart. At one point I was so depressed that I seriously considered taking my own life. Luckily, I was blessed with an amazing husband who loved me through the darkness and the worst experience of our lives actually made us stronger and more determined to love each other.

To this day my doctors still have no clue what made me so sick or how on earth I survived.

Hayden is 11!!!

Happy 11th Birthday Hayden Andrew!

I cannot believe that it has been 11 years since our sweet Hayden Andrew joined our family. We miss  so much that it hurts. We always send him balloons with messages, one balloon for every year old he is. We can't wait to be with him again.

Two Utah Trips

Wow, it was a crazy 3 weeks! I traveled to Utah twice, once with my Mom and then once with Robert and the Kids.

The first trip was a Girls Trip for my Mom and I. I spent my days at the Stampin' Up! Convention and the evenings with my brother and his family. It was a great 5 days!

Me, Jenn, Megan an MJ at the Stampin' Up! Offices

Fireworks with my Brother and Nephews

For our second trip we went for Robert's Parent's 50th Wedding Anniversary. It was a great weekend!

We took the kids to go see Hayden and some of Temple Square. It was so fun to see they're reaction to all the beautiful sights.

It was busy but a great 3 weeks of travel. This next year we're going to have a Staycation, I'm really looking forward to it.

Spring Break / Easter in Utah

For Easter this year we decided to go to Utah to visit friends and family.

In preperation for the trip I found these great little clipboard caddy things at Target for the kids, so they could color while we drove. They were a big hit!

As we were coming into Utah I looked over at the mountains and saw snow. I was hoping that it would stay in the mountains.

The first day we went as far as Spanish Fork, Utah where we stayed with my friend Marci and her family. The next morning which was April 1st, I awoke to the worst April Fool's joke ever....... SNOW! I'm not a fan at all but the kids LOVE it so we turned them loose outside.

Sage & Aurora had a blast hanging out with thier "cousin" Callie.

We loaded the kids up and went into Provo and saw HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, then went to visit Hayden.

The kids of course had to make a snowman for Hayden.

My 3 kids and the snowman.

Sage then started a snowball fight at the cemetary.

The next day we went to Draper for a visit to THE SWEET TOOTH FAIRY Bakery that was reccomended by Stephanie Nielson of NIENIE DIALOGUES

The cupcakes were to die for!!! The one on the top left is called the Va-NIE-lla Squared and all the proceeds go to the Nielson family to help pay for thier burn treatments.

I apologize for the flipped photo's, Blogger is being wierd.

We then went to Village Inn where Sage informed me that with crayons inbetween his fingers he's just like Wolverine.

The next day the kids had to build themselves Snowmen. Aurora insisted on a Princess Snowman, so we cut and colored paper and make a crown and bracelet

Sage insisted on a Spiderman/Pirate Snowman

The next day was Easter so we did an Egg Hunt where Sage found the golden egg. Then we went a visited Hayden one last time before leaving town to next morning.

We then found the house that once belonged to Robert's Grandpa in North Salt Lake.

One way home Monday we stopped in Scipio for gas and I saw this in the window

Only in Utah!

We stopped at Zion National Park since Robert had never been there. We drove a mile through this awesome tunnel in the mountain.

Sage & Aurora thought it was AWESOME and that Robert was the smartest Daddy ever for finding the way out of the tunnel.

I love this arch cut into the rock!

All in all it was a great trip and we had fun visiting family and playing with friends. We made lots of great memories.

The White Rose

Lately I've been struggling with how to include Hayden in our Family Pictures. I know that he's gone but he still very much a part of our Family and I want to be able to look back on pictures and see him as well as Sage and Aurora.

Today, as I was browsing my favorite Blogs I found my answer. The Call Family{CLICK HERE} has started this amazing Tradition, and I've decided to use it as well. From now on every Family Picture will include a single white rose. I am so excited to start this Tradition with this years Christmas Photos.

CLICK HERE to visit Hayden's Blog and read the Story of The White Rose.

What's in a Name?

When I found out that I was Pregnant with Hayden, I started thinking of names. Robert and I went to the Library and checked out every book about baby names. We went back and forth between so many names for the first 3 months. At first we really liked Brennan and Matthew for first names. We had his middle name picked out already.

One day while Robert was at work I was home watching TV when a re-run of Coach came on and I heard one of the character's talking to the main character who's name was Hayden Fox played by Craig T. Nelson. I knew then and there that I wanted to name my Son Hayden Andrew.

When he was born, I took one look at him and knew that this was still the right name for him. He will always be my little Coach.

This picture was taken a few weeks ago when I went to visit Hayden.

Utah ~ June 2009

My Mom, Sage, Aurora and I just returned from a great trip to Utah for my Nephew's High school Graduation. Here's how it went:

June 3rd ~ Got up at 4:15am and loaded the van with last minute items and the kids and left the house at 5:00 am. We were in hopes that the kids would sleep but they were wide awake as soon as I put them into the van. I drove all the way to Mesquite, Nevada where my Mom and I traded places because I'm a wimp and don't like to drive the Virgin River Gorge. We stopped in Beaver, Utah for the night, cause the kids really needed to get out and run.

June 4th ~ Got up and left Beaver at 8:00am. We were driving past Springville and Sage insisted that we stop and buy a toy for Hayden so we went to Wal-Mart and picked up this Pin-Wheel and Basketball. We Got into Salt Lake City around Noon and went directly to see Hayden.

Then we drove to my Brother Danny's House in Kearns, Utah where I dropped off my Mom and visited while the kids played with their dogs Snoodle and Parker. I then took the kids to Robert's parent's house and we had dinner and met the kids newest cousin Joshua. He's soooo tiny! Then I loaded up the kids again and went back down to Spanish Fork to stay at my best friend Marci's house. Marci also married a Parker{no relation that we know of).

June 5th ~ We spent the morning playing with Aunt Marci, Uncle Shawn and cousin's Callie and Wade and then went to the park. We came home for naps and worked in the backyard and then Callie, Sage & Aurora played croquet in the backyard.

Sage hugging Callie after he accidentally wacked her in the leg with his croquet mallet.

We then found this Ginormous Bee in the backyard. Sage even rode the back of Uncle Shawn's Police Car.
June 6th ~ We spent most of the day inside because it was so cold and the Sage & Aurora's allergies were really acting up with all the pollen in the air. The kids took naps and then we went shopping and then came home and ordered Papa Murphy's Pizza(the best pizza ever). We went for a walk along the stream near the house before bed and then came home and put the kids to bed and the adults stayed up till 12:30 am talking and laughing.
June 7th ~ I woke up at 7am and got the van packed up and said goodbye to Marci, Shawn, Callie & Wade at 8:30 and left for Salt Lake City to pick up my Mom and visit Hayden one last time before we left. We just added these pretty white flowers to the pink roses we took him a few days earlier. I really miss him and can't wait until April 2010 when we move him here to San Diego.
Then I dropped my Mom off at my Brother's Ward so she could be there when my Nephew was set apart as an Elder before he leaves for Snow College, where he'll be playing Football. I went and got gas and then we headed out. We stopped in St. George, Utah at Fazoli's for dinner(yum-o).

I snapped this after we came out of the Virgin River Gorge. The kids were watching a movie. We stopped at the Virgin River Hotel in Mesquite, Nevada for the night so the kids could run around.
June 8th ~ We left around 8am and headed for home. Sage was being super silly and was really enjoying watching his favorite movie off all-time, Ducktales: The Movie.

Aurora spent the entire trip home with her legs propped on the sides of her seat. She's such a little spaz.
It was a really fun trip, but we really missed Robert and are glad to be home. I don't think I'll ever travel with the kids without Robert until the kids are much older.

Surviving...

I found this poem on a friends Blog and just fell in love with it. People often ask me what it's like to lose a child, this poem describes what I feel on a daily basis.

My Mom Is A Survivor

My mom is a survivor,
Or so I’ve heard it said.
But I can hear her crying at night
When all others are in bed.

I watch her lay awake at night
And go to hold her hand.
She doesn't know I’m with her
To help her understand.

But like the sands on the beach
That never wash away…
I watch over my surviving mom,
Who thinks of me each day.

She wears a smile for others…
A smile of disguise!But though
Heaven’s door I see
Tears flowing from her eyes.

My mom tries to cope with death
To keep my memory alive.
But anyone who knows her, knows
It is her way to survive.

As I watch over my surviving mom
Through Heaven’s open door…
I try to tell her that angels
Protect me forevermore.

I know that doesn’t help her…
Or ease the burden she bears.
So if you get a chance, go visit her…
And show her that you care.

For no matter what she says…
No matter what she feels.
My surviving mom has a broken heart
That time won’t ever heal.

I gave birth to a perfect little boy. I can't believe it's been that long ago; my sweet Hayden Andrew would be 6 today. He is our reason for living and we think about him everyday. We love being with him at his grave site, and wish that we could see him more, but 800 miles tends to keep us apart more than we'd like.

I often wonder what Heavenly Father saw in me that made him think I could handle being a Mother to a perfect child. I know that in the beginning I blamed myself for his death but as the years have passed I have found it easier to cope with and I am now just starting to understand Heavenly Father's reason for taking Hayden away from us. He needed him more than we did, and I know that he is in Heaven watching out for us and keeping us all safe. I know that he is being well taken care of by my Grandma and Robert's Aunt Gwen. I count myself lucky to be his Mother, and know that we will be together again.

It helps that Sage & Aurora know who Hayden is and that we do talk about him every chance we get. They love to visit their brother and bring him presents. We take balloons, cars/trucks, flowers and anything we see that makes us think of him. We can't wait to be with him again, we are all anxiously awaiting the day when we can all laugh and play together.

This year we started a new tradition. We did it yesterday, since it would have meant spending money on Sunday. We decided that we would have a Family Day filled with fun, lunch and dinner out and then we would send him balloons for how many years old he is, so today we sent him 6 balloons. We attached a little note the the strings and we all signed it then the kids sent them floating off to Heaven for Hayden. Sage says... "Mommy, the balloons are going up to the sky for Hayden cause he's with Jesus. I miss Hayden Mommy". It makes me feel so good inside to hear him say those things about his big brother. Hopefully, Aurora will say those things soon too.

My friend just had a baby boy, and named her Son after Hayden. I feel so honored that she chose that name for her son, and cannot wait to meet him next week. We've decided that next year we are bringing Hayden down here to San Diego so we can be closer to him and visit whenever we want. I hope this year passes fast.
